Yesterday we enjoyed a leisurely lunch at Bar Zoki, Lido Felix, in one of our local sea-side villages, Torre San Gennaro. Bar Zoki can be found just past the piazza, perched on the edge of the Adriatic. With a covered deck open to the sea on one side and the beach on the other it has long been a favourite, for coffee, pre-lunch beer and evening aperitivi.
Having seen many other people taking lunch on the deck last Sunday we decided to do the same. Bar Zoki offers a fixed menu which varies on a daily basis, depending on the catch of the day. It has a €16 fixed price all seafood / fish menu with three choices for primi and three for secondi. Desserts, water and wine are extra.
Some of the staff speak a little English which is very helpful for the tourists who are lucky enough to find the place, We got chatting to a New Zealand couple who were staying in Lecce who had stumbled upon Torre San Gennaro and Bar Zoki. They were delighted to have found such a wonderful, off the beaten track, place.
We had Spaghetti al Cozze and Paccheri al Scorfano, folds of wide pasta with a scorfano (fish) sauce, for our primi. Scorfano translates as scorpionfish or rockfish but is also figuratively translated as “ugly bugger”. We had selected a bottle of chardonnay from the wine list, house wine by the glass or carafe, is also offered. The wine was well chilled and very fresh, from the winery SamPietrana in San Pietro Vernotico..
The secondi, or main, course was Gamberoni al Vodka for both of us. The presentation was excellent, the prawns de-veined and perfectly cooked.
Dessert is an extra – 2 or 3 euros depending on choice. Spumone for Bob and Torta alla Nonna for me. The Torta turned out to be a light lemon tart and was delicious.
A perfect light lunch in a wonderful sea-side setting….. and just a few minutes from Casa Mare. Perfect Puglia.
