La Pergola in Santa Maria al Bagno is another Puglia restaurant to make it onto our list of favourites. La Pergola is located on the town square in Santa Maria al Bagno and has superb views of the town beach and the immediate coastline.
We discovered both Santa Maria al Bagno and the restaurant La Pergola on a weekday in late July. With the sun shining and a light breeze eating, al-fresco with sea views seemed like a great way to celebrate our wedding anniversary, We had a table on the edge of the piazza close to the town beach.
At first glance the La Pergola menu didn’t seem to offer much more than the majority of restaurants here in Puglia. We started with Bresaola con Rucola e Grano (Cured beef with rocket and cheese shavings), Gamberoni al Catalana (shrimps in a tomato and herb sauce). Once the food arrived La Pergola shone. Simple food, beautifully presented and clearly made with the freshest, best ingredients.
To follow we had Spigola al forno con patate (sea bass cooked in the oven topped with thinly sliced potatos) and Scalopine (escalope of veal). Both equalled the quality of our starters, the sea bass was superb. All followed up with a very good Panna Cotta. A very nice Greco di Tufo accompanied our lunch. Service was leisurely which suited our mood. We lingered for a long time and enjoyed very good food and wine.
This is a real find and we will be going back. We want to try it earlier and later in the season and outside the season to.
Cost for two excluding wine was 60 euros.
