One of our favourite places for a leisurely shopping trip. We can combine supermarket shopping with a stroll through the streets of San Pietro, stopping for a cappucino or a beer in one of the many cafe-bars. Unlike our other local towns, San Pietro does have a long street of shops. Start at one end as you enter San Pietro and stroll along the olive lined street. From designer clothes to jewellery, ceramic tiles and kitchens, newsagents, hardware shops, supermarket Crai, many cafe-bars and geletarias, hairdressers and barbers – something is sure to catch your eye.
As you progress towards the old town of San Pietro be sure to look down, the pavements are now tiled and the streets cobbled. If you carry on far enough you will reach the piazza with the church on one side and the town hall on the other. Follow the example of the locals, stop for a chat or simply to take in the sights and the atmosphere. If you wander down the alleys from the square you will find the butchers, fish mongers, the bakery and many other small local businesses.
There is also a great farmers’ market on Saturday mornings in the square just off via Brindisi and via Rieti. As well as fruit and veg and deli products you will find textiles, clothes, household goods and no end of shoe stalls.
San Pietro boasts a cinema and many restaurants and pizzerias, recommended is the Cuore a Cuore serving traditional neapolitan style pizzas and tortas (reservations required). It also has a station from where you can take the train to Lecce, Brindisi or Bari of further afield.
San Pieto is home to the SamPietrana winery. It is here that we buy the wines for the welcome basket you will find in your Puglia holiday villa. If you would like to visit the winery to buy more wine during your holiday just let us know.
